For many, the year of 2020 was a depressing, devastating and unproductive year. Here at The Promised Land Adult Family Home we tried our absolute best to take advantage of this time, where the world seemed to sit still, to better ourselves for the benefit of the seniors that we care for. While many businesses cut back and became conservative, we went full speed ahead in the opposite direction and invested greatly into our own improvement to benefit our residents.
The first and most significant improvement to the home that we made this year was the beautiful construction of our fully covered deck in the back yard. Some of you may have seen our previous posts about this construction, but we are so excited about it that we will reiterate all that was done. Our large deck now includes a peaked roof that stands over 13 feet high at its peak. It is constructed with a gorgeous tongue and groove design and has 6 large sunroof windows. These windows allow for excellent natural lighting. The deck also includes 3 heaters and sun and wind blocking shades that can enclose the deck for a warm weather blocked experience while still allowing for some fresh air. This has been an excellent addition because it has allowed for families to have much more comfortable visitations outdoors while the state still mandates outdoor visitations only due to Covid-19. The residents and their families love to get the chance to get fresh air together while still under the warmth and protection of the deck.
Another change that we have made to the home is some technology improvements for better entertainment. Whereas before, televisions were family provided, now High definition flat screen televisions have been wall mounted in each bedroom. Each room also includes a Blu-ray/DVD player, as well as the option to have Xfinity television shows and/or a Roku or Amazon streaming stick to allow for all sorts of movie, music, and television options. Not only were televisions added to each room, but also a new entertainment stand with an electric fireplace was added to the living room to help modernize the aesthetic and enhance the viewing experience. The entertainment system is also holding a brand new 70” 4K Samsung that provides the residents with a near movie theater experience. It is great to sit around the screen with some popcorn or hot chocolate to watch a movie together. We have already seen the benefits of the improved set up, as those who are visually impaired or suffer from dementia, alzheimer or any mental ailment can now see the screen very well and also read the subtitles, which helps to keep the brain active. We try not to just sit in front of the TV all day by keeping our residents active and having fun doing activities, but this set up is definitely great for any downtime we may have.
Not only were physical changes made to the home, but also cleanliness standards were raised to an even higher level than the already high goals we had set for ourselves. We are extremely excited to announce that we have gone this entire pandemic without a single case of Covid-19 within our staff or residents. This makes us all very proud to know that our high work ethics and cleanliness levels were already at a level in which we could thoroughly protect all of our beloved residents until they were given the vaccine. Although all of our willing residents are now protected by the vaccine (which is ver exciting news as well), we will still continue to abide by our excellent levels of sanitation and cleanliness.
Our hearts and prayers go out to all of those that were impacted by this horrible pandemic, but we are so excited to have the end of the tunnel within sight. When many let the dark times consume them and let them become demoralized, we took advantage of this time and persevered. We are proud to say we not only made it through 2020, but we are better off than when we started.
