Just from a quick glance at our home, it is easy to tell that we at The Promised Land Adult Family Home love nature, plants and scenic gardens. One of our favorite areas of our gardens is our edible garden beds. We tend to 3 large above ground garden beds which host a wide range of edible fruits and vegetable, which we provide for our seniors. Our gardens change year to year but some of the most frequently grown plants in our garden include strawberries, tomatoes, kale, cilantro, carrots, garlic, and lettuce. All of the previously mentioned fruits and vegetables, among others that are cycled into our gardens, help us to provide truly nutrient rich and healthy foods for our residents. Not only does the garden provide nutritious foods for our seniors here, but it also brings opportunity for community and activity.
Gardening can be a very calming and joy bringing activity, especially for the elderly. Not only does it promote activity, but it also helps provide a sense of accomplishment as you get to literally reap what you sow. For all of our senior residents who are wanting and able to help, we allow them to assist in the organization, tending and picking of our garden. For those who are not physically able, often watching a garden being tended to can bring a sense of joy. Perhaps it reminds them of their childhood on a farm, tending to their own garden back at their home, or any other memory it may bring, but regardless of the reason, our garden has helped us to promote health, activity, and happiness within our seniors. When seeking a new home for yourself or an aging loved one, whether it be a nursing home, assisted living facility, or any other kind of senior care home, make sure that it is full of beautiful gardens to help bring joy to you or your loved one.
