Why an Adult Family Home?

Updated: May 5, 2020

As time goes on you may find yourself in a place where you or a loved one needs to receive a higher level of care. This can be caused by lack of mobility, loss of memory, progressed mental ailment, among various other things. Whatever the reason may be, a question will always follow this decision. That question is “where will they (or I) go to receive the best care. This article is in no way intended to put down larger facilities such as an assisted living facility or nursing home, as in some cases they are more fit for what a person may be looking for. This articles purpose is to inform of some of the advantages of staying at a smaller home such as an adult family home like The Promised Land Adult Family Home.

One advantage of placing yourself or a loved one in an adult family home is the personal care that they will receive. Unlike a larger facility that can have 50, 100, 200 or more residents with sometimes fewer than 5 caregivers to attend to these people, Adult family homes can only take 6 residents at a time and have 2 caregivers during the daylight hours and often 2 during the nigh time hours as well. This means that unlike a nursing home, which can have ratios of 10 to 1 residents to caregivers, Adult Family Homes are most likely 3 to 1 ratio of caregivers to residents. This higher ratio of caregivers to residents allow for a more personalized and less rushed way of caring for the patients at the Adult Family Home. It allows caregivers to have more time with each person they are giving care to, allowing them to further understand their likes and dislikes, truly fulfill their needs, and ultimately provide true companionship for the elder generation whom truly need and desire it. This more frequent care allows for swifter action when someone is acting out of the norm (warnings of certain health conditions), prevent infections such as urinary tract infections which are common for those who are incontinent (in need of briefs or diapers) due to more frequent toilet-ing and cleaning, among various other health benefits that come with more personalized care.

Another advantage of placing your loved one in an Adult Family Home, is the true sense of being in a home. Larger facilities such as nursing homes and memory care facilities are often designed in such a way that often make it obvious that these patients are living in a commercial building. This can be very unsettling for those who have memory loss or other impairments because it does not give them a sense of home or privacy being in a 10,000+ Square foot building with 100 other people around them. The Adult Family Home experience allows for these residents to truly feel a sense of home and allows them quick access to privacy such as a close bedroom or restroom with staff readily available to assist them.

One final point I will discuss about the advantages of Adult Family Homes is the ability to easily secure and evacuate the premise as needed. Not only can we evacuate the home in a quick and orderly fashion, we also have the ability to more easily monitor those coming in and out of the facility helping prevent theft, invasion and many other security issues. The ability to monitor more easily the coming and going of people and things gave as a huge advantage over infection spread such as Covid-19 (Corona Virus) pandemic of 2020 compared to larger facilities like Nursing homes and Assisted living facilities because we have significantly less people coming and going and have much less staff to monitor for infection. In short, a larger facility may be what you are looking for. However it is important to at least consider some of these points when trying to determine what time of care facility you place yourself or a loved one into.
